In art, looking is learning. If you feel like doing more than looking, encourage your child to copy the easier drawings, especially of birds, animals, trees, clouds, the Sun, the Moon, the Warli figures and so on, according to their level of skill and confidence. Don’t let the high quality of the artwork intimidate you. These pieces are by master craftsmen and artists and the idea is not for the child to produce such art themselves but to play around with the form by copying it in their own way. That itself will open their eye to the form and fire their imagination. Another enjoyable exercise for older kids is to use in their own drawings the same decorative elements like dots, slanting lines or concentric curved lines (see in particular the Madhubani and Gond paintings) that are typical of traditional Indian artforms.
